For strings. Duration - 8 minutes.
American cities are larger-than-life places where you can feel alive and be extroverted - they can also be isolating, lonely and profoundly unequal.
They can be excrutiatingly loud and poignantly quiet. Bright lights contrast with dark alleys. Nature can be incredibly distant, or as close as your backyard.
Above all, American cities are filled with people. You can't help but interact with people from all walks of life and backgrounds on a daily basis - sometimes by accident while bumping into someone in a restaurant, sometimes by reconnecting with friends old and new. You learn a lot about people.
They are places where you can learn about yourself and find yourself.
Commissioned by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. Premiered May 2024 by Accelerando Strings under Daniela Valdez.
